Educator FAQ’s

What do I need to know about edQuire before I get started?

edQuire helps teachers understand the pedagogical value of computers in the class room. The application was developed using cutting edge analytical and smart algorithms. Our sophisticated engine is capable of processing real-time student computer activity. Our engine applies a simple colour code system to education and entertainment resources that students engage with during the lesson; we then display this analysed information to your teacher dashboard instantly.

Quite simply our dashboard colours represents student activity through an easy-to-understand traffic light system.

The teacher determines what is on task (green).

What does edQuire consider as entertainment and education?

Our edQuire agent is really smart! In short it applies machine learning to our extensive pre-classified database of local and online resources. The core database was created, analysed and classified by educational experts. The edQuire machine learning algorithm learns from this information and automatically applies its knowledge to websites and software, classifying them as education as entertainment and then displaying them in the traffic light system.

Our dashboard colours represent:

Is edQuire a blocking and filtering tool?

No, edQuire does not block and filter. edQuire software sits on the student’s device and evaluates resources the student accesses during the lesson for their educative value. It serves as a tool in the classroom to support the teacher with valuable learning information.

What type of information does edQuire collect from my students?

We capture information on local applications and online sites. For local applications (software on the student’s device), edQuire can read the software and file title, and for online sites, edQuire can read the URL string and tab title.

edQuire also measures keyboard and clipboard activity, however edQuire focuses on task and not content. We collect the frequency of type and clipboard activity not content (words and images created by the student).

I use social media in my class. Is this considered off task by edQuire?

The beauty of edQuire is that the teacher determines what is on task for the lesson. If social media is used as a lesson resource, you can categorise this activity as on task entering the URL on the Resources Page, before or during the lesson.

Can edQuire work on all student devices?

edQuire supports a wide range of hardware platforms found in most educational settings. It works on Windows 7/8/10, Mac OS, Android 4.3 and Chromebook OS. Apple iOS (iPad and iPhone) is not currently supported due to the restrictions on permissions in the operating system.

Can I buy edQuire just for my class and how much does it cost?

You can buy edQuire as a school-based purchase. We ask for enrolment of at least one year level. edQuire is really affordable at AUD$9.95 (exc. GST), and NZ$11, per year/per student. There are no other installations or customer service costs!

Can I access my edQuire teacher dashboard from home?

Yes. As edQuire is cloud-based, a unique school URL is created, and information is accessed via a web based browser. Device access includes laptops/notebooks, desktop PCs, tablets (including Android and iPad) and even cell phones (including Android, iPhone and Windows phones).

Browser compatibility includes Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, FireFox (Windows only) and Microsoft Edge.

What are the minimum system requirements for an edQuire student agent?

Student devices must support the following minimum requirements to run edQuire:
Windows 7 (or above) or OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 (or above) or Android OS (v4.3, v4.4) or Chrome OS
Minimum Disk space 1 GB
Internet bandwidth ~10kbps per student upload and 1kbps download

Is edQuire secure?

In short: Yes.

The edQuire architecture is centered on the privacy of student information and activity data. Our software is designed to lockdown data storage based on the school requirements; we do not hold any information outside of the requested reporting hours as defined during initial configuration. We provide this information via the IT dashboard, displaying the number of active students, detail of bandwidth usage and the activity exchange between the student device and our database. Our cloud infrastructure is hosted in regions.Every request from our software sent to our cloud infrastructure is encrypted and signed with a username and password for authentication. This means all data transmissions from student computers are watertight and secure with each request authenticated separately. Additionally, we transmit our request using SSL and by using HTTPS SSL, which encrypts the transmission preventing the request or the response from being viewed in transit.

I use Youtube as part of teaching. Does edQuire classify youtube titles as on and off task?

Yes – our algorithm can instantly classify youtube as either on or off task.
