Did you know that Australian teachers work longer hours than those in most OECD countries?
A recent survey revealed that teachers in Australian secondary schools work considerably longer hours than most OECD countries; in particular, they spend more time on administration and non-teaching tasks.
The OECD’s Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2018 has reviewed teachers in 30 nations, and concluded that Australian secondary school teachers work an average of 44.8 hours a week, which is six hours more than the international average of 38.8 hours a week. Interestingly though, the extra time is not spent in class, but on extra tasks, such as marking and lesson planning. In fact, school time spent teaching has fallen in the last five years, whilst time spent on administration has increased, and is now 33% higher than the OECD average.
As Australian Education Union Federal President Correna Haythorpe said, “escalating workloads impacts on teaching and learning in schools. Teachers should not be spending more time on administration than on teaching”. It is evident that unnecessary teachers’ workload needs decreasing, to allow them to spend more time doing what they love: teaching. That is where learning analytics comes to help.
Why should teachers spend their time gathering students’ data when they could have immediate access to it just at a glance? Teachers know how important personalised learning is, but collecting all the students’ data is very time consuming, and it is evident that Australian teachers already have a heavy workload.
edQuire’s AI learning analytics helps teachers get all the data they need without impacting on their workload, by giving them real time data when they need it. The data gathered is simple, glance-able, and actionable. If you are interested to see how edQuire’s AI learning analytics can benefit your school, please visit our website www.edquire.com
