Education Minister Dan Tehan admitted being very disappointed at last year’s poor student test results, and said that ‘alarm bells should be ringing’. Australian students have registered record low results in reading, maths, and science.
These results were released on Tuesday by the PISA report, the Program for International Student Assessment, which evaluates educational systems by measuring 15-year-old pupils’ scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading. Last year’s PISA involved more than 600,000 students in 79 countries and economies, including more than 14,000 students in 740 Australian schools.
The report shows that Australian students’ maths skills are at least a year behind their international counterparts, and three-and-a-half years behind their Chinese ones. The PISA report also shows that the maths performance gender gap in favour of boys has returned.
